This handsome black sculpture was produced asa replica of a traditional Haida argillite totem pole. It has a polished blackappearance resembling argillite, with deeply modeled Northwest Coast-inspiredfigures and designs.
The base is marked:

Especially nice is the surviving originallabel on the reverse, which identifies the piece as a replica of a hand-carvedHaida argillite pole from the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, nowknown as Haida Gwaii. The label also identifies the piece as made in Vancouver,Canada.
This is a vintage commercially producedreproduction and is not represented as an Indigenous-made or hand-carvedargillite piece.
Measures approximately 7 5/8” high. Basemeasures approximately 3” x 2”.
A striking piece of vintage Canadian décorwith strong graphic presence, and an interesting collectible relating to thelong history of Northwest Coast art-inspired Canadian souvenirs.
