One-of-a-Kind Vintage GDR Floor Lamp and Bar Cabinet
Some objects simply complement an interior. Others become the focal point around which the entire space is created.
This unique vintage floor lamp and mini bar is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted redesign based on an original piece of furniture from the German Democratic Republic, also known as East Germany.
It is not a mass-produced reproduction and not a standard factory restoration. It is a collectible statement piece that combines the functions of:
- a floor lamp;
- a compact bar cabinet;
- a side cabinet;
- a decorative interior accent.
The original vintage character and unusual architectural shape have been preserved, while the finishes, lighting, glass elements and selected details have been carefully redesigned and renewed.
Only one example is available.
Cabinet Restoration and Redesign
The cabinet was completely cleaned and prepared before refinishing.
The original wood and veneer were toned in a deep, rich shade and protected with premium Osmo oil-wax. This finish highlights the natural wood grain while providing durable surface protection.
The redesign included:
- cleaning and refinishing of the wooden cabinet;
- restoration and toning of the original veneer;
- premium Osmo oil-wax protective finish;
- refinishing of all metal elements in an elegant gold-tone finish;
- installation of real metal leg caps in place of the original decorative plastic elements;
- restoration and cleaning of the original interior leather covering;
- replacement of the glass elements;
- installation of new electrical components;
- installation of a new vintage-style textile-covered cable;
- installation of new decorative plug and retro switches;
- production of custom decorative switch plates.
The decorative switch plates were specially designed, 3D printed and manually prepared for painting because suitable ready-made replacements were not available.
Two Independent Light Sources
The lamp has two separately controlled light sources:
- the upper floor lamp;
- the internal illumination of the bar compartment.
Each light is operated by its own retro-style switch.
This allows the piece to be used in several ways:
- as a functional floor lamp;
- as an illuminated home bar;
- as atmospheric ambient lighting;
- as a decorative statement piece.
The warm light beautifully highlights the wood, glass, leather and gold-tone details.
Adjustable and Removable Lamp
The lampshade was completely reupholstered with new fabric while preserving its original shape.
The articulated lamp joint allows the direction of the light to be adjusted.
The entire upper lamp section can also be removed, allowing the lower part to be used separately as a vintage bar cabinet, side table or decorative cabinet.
Original Vintage Interior
The original leather lining inside the bar compartment has been preserved.
It was carefully cleaned and restored rather than replaced with a modern material. Minor signs of age remain and are part of the authentic vintage character of the piece.
New Glass Elements
All glass elements were replaced to ensure a clean appearance and reliable everyday use.
The piece includes:
- a new shaped glass tabletop;
- a new semicircular internal glass shelf;
- new glass doors for the bar compartment.
The lower shelf has been decorated with silver leaf to create a reflective, mirror-like effect.
Finished on All Sides
The rear of the cabinet is also finished with natural veneer and has a complete, presentable appearance.
For this reason, the piece does not have to stand directly against a wall. It can also be placed in the centre of a room, lounge, studio, bar area or other open interior space.
Vintage Condition
This is an authentic vintage item that has undergone an extensive handcrafted redesign.
The wooden cabinet retains some small signs of age, natural variations and traces of its previous life. These details have not been completely concealed because they form part of the history and character of the item.
