HISTORICAL NOTE: AN ANGEL ARCABUCERO(Arquebusier angel) is a unique style of religious paintingoriginating in the Viceroyalty of Peru during the late 17th and 18th centuries.These iconic works—mostly produced by the Cusco School—depict celestial beingsdressed in Andean aristocratic fashion carrying early muzzle-loading firearmsinstead of traditional swords.
Thearquebusier angels served as powerful symbols of the "ChurchMilitant," used by Spanish missionaries to spread Catholicism while subtlyblending European and indigenous cultures.
Distinctivefeatures of these paintings include:
- Attire: Angels are depicted in sumptuous17th- and 18th-century European fashion combined with feathered,Andean-inspired hats indicating high nobility.
- Weaponry: The angels hold aharquebus (or arquebus), a cutting-edge 15th-century firearm.
- CulturalBlending: Indigenous communities readily identified with these exalted warriorfigures, often associating them with their own powerful warrior traditions anddeities.
Today, CuscoSchool's colonial paintings of ángeles arcabuceros are found in, notably in theChurch of Calamarca (Bolivia), many cities of Peru, Bolivia, northernArgentina, churches and museums in Mexico, in various museums in Spain and inthe New Orleans Museum of Art. There is also a collection of ten ángelesarcabuceros in the San Francisco de Padua Church in Uquía, located inArgentina's Quebrada de Humahuaca.
