VINTAGE 1956-1958 PUMA WAIDMESSER 3591 MULTI-TOOL HUNTING KNIFE - FIRST GENERATION - DEEP DIE STAMPS, RICH AGED STAG & MATCHING 1950S SOLINGEN METAL POCKET SCABBARD RIG
Up for sale is a rare, highly collectible piece of Solingen history: a verified First-Generation PUMA Waidmesser (Model 3591) dating between 1956 and 1958. Developed in the 1950s in collaboration with Chief Forester Walter Frevert, this early model represents the golden era of PUMA field tools. This knife is in excellent, honest vintage condition. It is not a modern reproduction or a polished safe-queen; it is a beautifully preserved, genuine survivor that shows the authentic character, patina, and minor wear expected of a 70-year-old hunting tool.
VERIFIED FIRST-GENERATION HALLMARKS:
• Deep Die-Stamped Primary Blade: The front face of the main blade features the early "PUMA-WERK SOLINGEN" layout along with "HANDARBEIT" and "BESTELL-Nr 3591". These markings are deeply struck directly into the carbon steel, showing the authentic metal displacement of 1950s factory drop-dies.
• Secondary Skinner Stamp: The folding skinning blade features a dedicated, deeply struck secondary "PUMA SOLINGEN" cat-head logo at the tang—a premium detail that PUMA phased out on later production runs.
• Pre-1964 Blank Liners: The brass liners are completely blank with no 4-digit quality control date codes anywhere in the tool wells, confirming its 1950s pedigree.
• Intricate Fluted Corkscrew: Features the traditional machined, grooved (fluted) corkscrew steel, exclusive to PUMA's earliest multi-tools.
HONEST CONDITION REPORT:
• Blades & Steel: The carbon steel blades retain their full factory profiles and have not been ruined by aggressive grinding or heavy-handed sharpening wheels. The steel displays a gorgeous, natural vintage patina with authentic surface oxidation spots and light scuffs from age, but it is completely free of deep, destructive pitting.
• Stag Scales: The genuine stag horn scales boast a beautiful, deep popcorn texture and a dark, rich burnt-amber contrast. They remain thick, full, and tight against the frame. There are two very tiny, superficial age/stress hairlines near the brass pins. These are completely stable, entirely normal for 70-year-old organic stag, and do not affect the structural integrity. The hexagonal German silver engraving shield is perfectly seated. Mechanics: The heavy backsprings remain incredibly robust. All folding tools exhibit a powerful mechanical snap ("walk and talk") and lock up tight with no loose wobble.
PREMIUM PERIOD-CORRECT METAL POCKET SCABBARD:
Instead of the standard factory leather belt loop sheath, this knife comes paired with a highly collectible, vintage Hubertus-style "Taschenmesser-Scheide" (pocket knife scabbard) from the same era.
• The Construction: A rigid metal-core body wrapped in dark brown leather, finished with a classic nickel-silver throat and nose cap.
• Why it belongs with this knife: This is a dedicated German hunting scabbard engineered specifically for heavy Solingen multi-tools. The wide nickel-silver throat features a precise factory cutout that contours and locks perfectly against the knife's fixed finger guard, holding the heavy stag handle rock-solid and upright.
• Historical Context: In the 1950s, elite European hunters frequently discarded basic factory belt sheaths. They purchased these rigid pocket scabbards so the heavy multi-tool could sit flat and upright inside a hunting coat or leather breeches pocket without wearing through the fabric or digging into the hip while seated. It is a fantastic, high-end historical marriage that perfectly fits the knife and adds unique character to the set.
True 1950s Waidmessers with double-stamped blades are incredibly scarce. Combined with its gorgeous aged character and the highly functional vintage pocket scabbard, this rig is a spectacular addition to any vintage German cutlery collection.
