Jenny Lou Sherburne Signed Studio Art Pottery Lidded Botanical Tureen Whimsical
This exceptional studio art pottery lidded jar is a fine functional vessel handcrafted by the noted North Carolina ceramic artist Jenny Lou Sherburne. True to the artist\'s signature style, this container balances whimsical organic geometry with precise, hand-thrown technique. The piece features a distinct, sculpted form reminiscent of a stylized vegetable or botanical element. The main body is heavily carved with concentric, deeply textured lobes finished in a dark plum glaze with highlighted ridges, opening up to a rich, fluid teal glazed interior. The matching lid mimics a vibrant green leaf or umbrella structure, topped with a contrasting red architectural loop handle. This hand-thrown and altered stoneware jar measures 6 inches high to the top of the lid handle, has a 7-inch diameter at the flared rim of the lid, and has a 5 1/8-inch interior opening. The piece weighs 2 pounds and 11 ounces, making it feel solid, substantial, and balanced in the hand. The unglazed foot clearly reveals the natural clay body and bears the incised cursive signature of the artist, Jenny Lou Sherburne. This United States manufactured piece remains in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, or signs of wear, making it a stellar addition for collectors of modern American craft and Southern Appalachian studio pottery.
