KingHenry II built Orford castle in the 12th century for coastal defense.Orford, which at one time was as impressive as Henry\'s laterachievements at Dover castle, now stands in splendid isolation withonly its central defensive building, called a keep, remaining.
Orfordrepresents the evolving science of castle design in the late 12th andearly 13th centuries. Orford\'s keep was an intermediate designbetween the older rectangular and square keeps, that were prone toundermining, and concentric castles. Like earlier square orrectangular keeps, the entrance was well protected by a forebuilding; a feature eliminated as outer defensives became moreeffective. The keep has unique polygon shaped walls on the outside,cylindrical walls on the inside, with several unequal sides and threelarge rectangular turrets reaching 90 feet, that gave archers a wideangle of fire. The pointed windows and the chapel vaulting in thefore building are among the earliest known examples of Gothicarchitecture in England. Inside the Keep, there was a large well-litchamber with a spiral staircase in one tower and chambers in theothers. The curtain walls and mural towers, of which there were atleast four, are no longer standing.
Orford is theearliest English castle for which detailed documentary evidence forthe construction has survived. These records show that between 1165and 1173, Henry spent more money on Orford than any other castle.Quickly built upon his accession, Orford was a projection of royalpower in East Anglia, where there were no royal castles. Orfordcastle immediately proved its worth by holding out during therebellion of Henry\'s oldest son Henry \'The Young King\' in 1173-74.The advanced design of the castle must have acted as a deterrent asit was not directly attacked although fighting did occur nearby.
Though brieflysurrendered to Price Louis of France in the war of 1216-17, Orfordremained a royal castle. By 1336, it had declined in importance tosuch an extent that Edward III granted it in perpetuity to Robert deUfford, Earl of Suffolk. East Anglia\'s adherence to theParliamentarian causes saved Orford from damage during the Civil War.
Although the baileydefenses were intact in 1600, they steadily declined and collapsedover the next 200 years until, on the night of July 1, 1841, the lastsection of the bailey wall collapsed \"with a tremendous crash.\"
