Expandeddescription of actual structure:
The Frasers wereone of many Anglo-Norman families to settle in Scotland in the 11thand 12th century. In the 15th century, some of the Frasers resettlednear Stoneywood, Aberdeenshire on land upon which Castle Fraser nowstands. The castle is one of the grandest examples of Scottishbaronial architecture and has been continuously occupied for morethan 500 years.
Externally, littlehas changed at the castle since the completion of two long lowbuildings by the First Lord Fraser, in 1635. The core building datesfrom about 1454, when the Frasers were confirmed in the newly formedbarony of Stoneywood and Muchalls in Mar. From 1560 to 1570, MichaelFraser and his son Andrew created a modified Z plan building. Tobuild the upper works of his castle Andrew employed J. Bell, a localfamily of master Masons, whose work can be recognized at MidmarCastle, Crathes and Craigievar. The elements of rough granite, aprofusion of ornament, stone cannon and angle turrets with lozengeand dormer windows carved and peaked above the wallheads, and a high-pitched roof with gables crow-stepping gracefully across the tilesall come together as the gem called Castle Fraser.
In 1633, KingCharles I created Andrew as the First Lord Fraser. The Second LordFraser was active in the Civil War and in 1640 entertained Protestantleaders, including the Duke of Montrose, at Castle Fraser. Duringthis period of civil strife, the forces of Montrose, who had changedallegiances, twice threatened Castle Fraser. Andrew, Third Lord, succeeded his father in 1664 and of necessity sold Stoneywood.Andrew\'s second wife, Lady Jane McKenzie, was instrumental inpreventing the sale of Castle Fraser.
Charles, FourthLord Fraser, inherited an impoverished estate. In 1683 he married hiscousin\'s widow, Marjorie Erskine of Inverallochy. Following thecollapse of the Jacobite cause, Charles was jailed but was releasedto care for his dying child. In 1715, Charles again came out for theJacobite cause but died in a mysterious fall from a cliff in 1716.
The children fromMarjorie Erskine\'s first marriage assumed the lairdship of CastleFraser and Inverallochy. Simon Fraser, a Lovat Fraser descendant, hadtwo sisters who inherited the castle. Eliza, who never married, became Laird of Castle Fraser while Martha inherited Inverallochy, married a McKenzie, and her grandson Charles became laird of bothestates.
Today, CastleFraser cares for over 2,000 manuscripts of music.
