Expandeddescription of actual structure:
The story ofArundel begins in 1067 when Roger de Montgomery was created Earl ofArundel and given a third of Sussex as a reward for his carefulstewardship of Normandy while William I was conquering England. Thecastle was built four miles from the south coast high on a chalk spuroverlooking the River Arun with magnificent views over the SouthDowns. Stone, much of which still exists today, would have quicklyreplaced the original timber Motte and Bailey fortifications. Roger\'sson, Robert de Belesme, inherited Arundel but sided with the Duke ofNormandy against Henry l, resulting in the castle being besieged forthree months. Belesme was captured, imprisoned and the Castlereverted to the Crown.
When Henry died, his widow (Queen Adeliza) married William d\'AIbini who was given theestate. In 1139, Empress Matilda (or Maude), daughter of Henry I,came to Arundel claiming the throne of England. King Stephen, hercousin and rival, surrounded the castle but soon raised the siege, and for reasons not clearly understood, allowed Matilda to leaveunmolested. In 1243, the last of the male Albini\'s died and Arundelpassed to his daughter, Isable, who married John Fitzalan
The Fitzalans heldthe castle until 1556, when Mary married Thomas Howard (4th Duke ofNorfolk) uniting the Fitzalans and the Howards and bringing Arundelto the Dukes of Norfolk who have held it ever since. In the 1640\'s,Arundel suffered its third, last and worst siege. The Castle fellinto Parliamentarian hands during the Civil War, but on the December9, 1643, surrendered to the Royalists.
On December 19 theRoundheads began their siege, placing artillery in the tower of St.Nicholas Church that wrought such damage that the Royalist garrisonsurrendered. Cannon ball damage can still be seen on the walls of theBarbican Towers. The Castle remained a ruin for nearly 150 yearsuntil the 8th Duke began restoration in 1716 with work continued bythe 10th Duke in 1789, who rebuilt in the fashionable Gothic style.
In the late 19thcentury, the 15th Duke swept away most of the architectural fantasy and undertook a more straightforward reconstruction of the earlyNorman stronghold. The Castle with its circular Keep, double Baileyand a stone stairway up the mound to the Keep is essentially asmaller version of Windsor Castle. The aspect featured in thesculpture is the Barbican built by Richard Fitzalan in 1295 and theNorman inner gatehouse built by Earl Roger de Montgomery circa1067-1094.
