Expandeddescription of actual structure:

TheSalisbury of today is the second city of that name. The site of itspredecessor, still known in Medieval Latin as Old Sarum, can still beseen on a steep hill on the outskirts of the new city.

Thisnatural strongpoint was fortified in prehistoric times, most probablyduring the early Iron Age, and acted as a focus for an importantRoman road network. Subsequently, it was fought over by the Britonsand Saxons; the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 552 records a battle at‘the place called Searoburh’ – the name itself meant the townof battle. The Normans made this ancient fortress more importantstill; a powerful castle rose to dominate the already formidableearthworks, with an imposing cathedral on the next level downhill. Only the foundations survive today, but their scale bears witness tothe scope of Norman power and achievement. Life in the hilltopstronghold was turbulent and violent as Bishops constantly clashedwith the Royal garrison.

Eventuallyin 1219, Bishop Richard Poore succeeded in gaining permission fromboth king and pope to abandon the contentious hilltop and buildafresh in the peaceful valley below. When he laid the foundationstone of his new church in 1220 he became the founder of the moderncity of Salisbury. New Sarum stands east of the River Avon andunlike most other English towns was not allowed to develop in astraggling or accidental fashion. On the contrary, Bishop Poore laidout a grid-plan of streets causing the ‘blocks’ so defined, tobecome known as ‘chequers’. Thecastle was abandoned at the close of the Middle Ages and thecathedral demolished in 1331. The new city received its RoyalCharter of Liberties in 1227 but remained under the control of theBishops until 1611, when the town was granted a Charter ofIncorporation, which meant that the citizens were freed fromecclesiastical control and long years of conflict were brought to anend. But the perennial troubles between the clergy and the citizenryrose to a serious height at the beginning of the 14thcentury, and in 1327 Edward III granted the Dean and Chapter licenseto protect themselves by building round the Close an \"embattledwall of stone\" which they took from the abandoned cathedral atOld Sarum.

TheNorman carved stones can be seen built into the wall at many places. Its gates still stand (and still shut at night) emphasizing theseparateness of life in the Close. The cathedral holds two specialrelics: the library above the East Walk of the cloisters contains oneof the four surviving copies of Magna Carta, while in the NorthTransept is a 600-year-old clock in working order; the oldest inBritain.

Standinginside the Close next to St. Ann\'s Gate is Malmesbury House whereKing Charles II stayed on his escape route to France after beingdefeated at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Charles wasknowledgeable and witty, but pleasure-seeking and disloyal to hiswife; he sired 13 illegitimate children. Exiled in 1646 after defeatin the first English Civil War, he was proclaimed King in 1649 butremained powerless while England was a Commonwealth and Protectorate(under Oliver Cromwell).

Afterlosing the Battle of Worcester Charles fled to the continent but wasrecalled by parliament and Charles began his reign in 1660. Charlessurvived the Plague (1665) and the Fire of London (1666) and twocostly sea wars with the Dutch marred his reign. St Ann’s Gate isone of the entrances to the largest Close in England and was built inthe 14thcentury at the same time as the Close wall (1331). It is claimedthat when Handel came to England he gave his first public concert inthe room over St Ann’s Gate in 1710.
