GE P-800A Radio Professionally Repaired Works Good USA Vintage 1958This radio is electronically restored. It works like when it was made and is in used condition. For a detailed description of the radio and the work done, please continue reading:Initial inspection:
This radio came to me 10-16-2026. It was absolutely filthy and covered in roller paint dots. I connected it to power and the radio did come on. I managed to get it to tune the powerful KEX radio station and I could barely hear it. That is often a condition of open electrolytic capacitors.Research:
Made in the USA in 1958 and ‘59, this radio uses five transistors and has two IF stages. It appears in Beitman’s #20, pg. 60. It runs on 4xAA batteries.Repair:
I carefully disassembled the radio and replaced the four electrolytic capacitors this radio uses. One was open. The rest tested as very tired. Once replaced, the radio then would get really loud, tuned stations with ease, and sounded good.Next its cabinet got a thorough cleaning. This radio was present while a couple of rooms were painted where it had many roller paint dots in maroon and white. It cleaned up well and looks good. (actually, I had to leave one… just below the “GE” logo. That one just would not budge using any safe method, so I had to leave it…)Once cleaned, I applied a little deox to its volume control, made sure its earphone jack works, and carefully reassembled the radio. Once back together, I went over its alignment procedure and peaked its performance. It works really good!Note of interest: This radio uses a different type of speaker than most radios. I call it a “pin” speaker when I refer to them. They are often referred to as: “Stylus” or “Reed”.Performance:
Volume control goes smoothly quiet to overload loud.It is sensitive. (especially for a 1958 transistor radio). I like to try to find the super-weak stations… my favorite is KEJB, a radio station in Eureka California that is 402 miles away. Found it, no problem, and listened to it at a low volume for about half an hour.Condition:
Chips? Yes, some tiny ones. Cracks? Yes, I found one in the top back half of the clamshell and another in a corner. I clamped closed and sealed those . Scratches? Yes, this radio has been well used and is ready to be used some more. Please see my photos.Collector Quality: “C”Epilogue & Opinion:
Ya know, I am actually a little impressed with how this radio works. First, I love radios that have a big front facing dial. They make for a radio to be more selective and easy to tune. A unique feature is the dial’s magnifying glass. It works and is a nice touch. This radio also has a “long-bar” antenna, so it tunes weak stations very well.-----I usually service the vintage radios I sell on . Serviced = I clean the volume control, check the radio’s alignment, and check its current draw. I also fix whatever else needs attention.I ship USPS Flat Rate. A tracking number will be provided the following business day after purchase. I will combine shipping when applicable, so please see my other cool old radios for sale.-karl : )_
