1911 Cushman Montana DPO RPPC Man at Wooden Irrigation Flume 4-BarDescription:
Scarce original 1911 real photo postcard associated withCushman, Montana, showing a man standing in a narrow watercourse beneath an elevatedwooden irrigation flume. The long timber trough is carried across the drainage on heavy wooden supports, a characteristic early water-conveyance structure used to carry irrigation water over low ground, creeks, or other obstacles. The image is an unusually good piece of vernacular agricultural and irrigation history from a very small central Montana locality.
The photographic subject is the principal collector interest here: early Cushman real-photo views are much less commonly encountered than ordinary postmarked cards from the locality. The man, open prairie setting, water channel, and substantial wooden flume give the card strong documentary value for collectors of Montana RPPCs, irrigation history, rural engineering, homestead-era photography, and Golden Valley County material.
The card was mailed fromCushman, Montana, June 6, 1911, at 6 P.M., with a clear circular date stamp and4-bar canceltying a 1-cent green Benjamin Franklin Washington-Franklin issue. It is addressed toMiss Amelia Dohre, Frazee, Minnesota. The handwritten correspondence is a family message signedClara Dohre.
Cushman is a discontinued Montana post office, operating from 1909 to 1975.It is now in Golden Valley County; when this card was mailed in June 1911, the locality was within newly created Musselshell County, as Golden Valley County was not organized until 1920. The DPO postmark provides an additional postal-history component, but the unusual Cushman RPPC image itself is the stronger feature of the card.
