Original real photo postcard showing three cattle standing in open ranch country near Cushman, Montana. The handwritten caption along the image margin reads approximately, “These cows are around home close to them,” identifying the animals as part of the sender’s immediate home or ranch setting.
The photograph presents a characteristic early homestead-era Montana landscape: open grassland, a low distant horizon, and livestock standing close to the camera. Two of the animals have white faces, while the third appears solid dark. The informal composition and manuscript caption give the card strong vernacular, agricultural, and family-documentary character.
The card was mailed from Cushman, Montana, on September 30, 1911, and bears a clear circular Cushman postmark tying a green one-cent Benjamin Franklin stamp. Cushman was a small railroad and homestead community in central Montana. Its post office was established in 1909 and is reported to have been discontinued in 1940, making this an early use from a now-discontinued Montana post office.
At the time of mailing, Cushman lay in Musselshell County; Golden Valley County was not created until 1920. The community developed along the Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Railway during the homestead era and later declined as rail and agricultural activity diminished.
The card is addressed to Miss Amelia Slobe at Frazee, Minnesota. The sender begins “Dear sis,” acknowledges receipt of a letter, apologizes for not writing sooner, and mentions being occupied with school and work at home. The message is written in a casual family hand across the correspondence side and continues around the card, adding social-history and genealogical interest.
The divided-back real photo card combines an identified Montana ranch scene, cattle, family correspondence, an early 1911 Cushman postmark, one-cent Franklin postage, and a discontinued-post-office association.
