Theodore Jasper, A.M., M.D.
New York & Columbus, Ohio: Jacob H. Studer & Co., 1881. First Edition.
Offered is an original hand-colored lithographic plate removed from the landmark 1881 edition ofStuder's Popular Ornithology: The Birds of North America, one of the finest American natural history publications of the late nineteenth century.
PlateLXVII,“The Raven (Corvus corax),”depicts a dramatic pair of ravens in a woodland setting, accompanied by several smaller birds. Particularly striking is the animal skeleton and skull in the foreground—an unusual detail that gives the image an almost Gothic character.
The powerful black birds, atmospheric landscape, and macabre natural-history detail make this one of the more visually distinctive plates in the series, appealing to collectors of antique ornithological prints as well as buyers seeking Victorian or Gothic wall décor.
Unlike modern reproductions, this is an authentic nineteenth-century chromolithograph.
Condition:Clean example with wide original margins. Light age toning consistent with age. Minor evidence of former binding along one edge. Blank verso. No foxing, tears, repairs, or trimming observed.
A striking original Victorian natural history print suitable for framing, and an unusually dramatic image from one of America's classic nineteenth-century ornithological works.
