Chalcocite, pseudo hexagonal xtls, iridescent, Flambeau mine, Wisconsin, top: $985.00
Here is , quite simply, a top end Chalcocite miniature of which you\'ll likely not soon will see another, from the flambeau mine, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Basically quite large pseudo-hexagonal crystals and iridescent (blue and purple..) colors. The crystals are quite thick, like inflated muffins, if you will, more thick than usual for the locality of the Flambeau mine. from the top, towards the bakc, the Hexagonal crystals morph into a skeletal back side. this piece is a floater, don\'t think there is any damage to it, it is in excellent condition. Chalcocites from the flambeau mine often have this mix between sharp features and then elsewhere transition into a more erratic and skeletal crystal growth. I think, in Miniature size, it will be challenging for anyone to find a better specimen from the Flambeau mine. I bought it from Jim Lehigh recently, for way more than my usual price per piece, as I just had to have it. He had the full price of $1500 on there, which I though reasonable in this case, given the quality. A piece like this would easily be between 2 and 3000 dollars, as it is simply a top miniature for the species, and the locality. Interestingly enough, this specimen was formerly in the Jim McEwen collection, of which Jim Lehigh obtained a number of fine specimens. Jim McEwen clearly valued his copper sulfide specimens and clearly had an eye for the very top end of these minerals. Please also see the excellent specimen with Bornite crystals on Chalcopyrite from Cornwall I have just listed, came out of that same collection, also represents a similar level of quality.Jim Lehigh did tell me that Casey Jones was the one collecting this specimen in the mid 90\'s. Jim was only willing to marginally go down on it\'s prices for these specimens, so my price pretty much reflects what I paid for it, but I want to make it available for sale. The only slight flaw on this specimen, as I can see it is that this specimen was mounted on an acrylic base with mineral tack for an extended amount of time, with two points of attachment. Age has made the mineral tack a little brittle, so when it was taken off, a residue remained on those two mounting spots. It can mostly likely be cleaned, but I have simply not attempted it, as I don\'t want to mess with a perfect specimen. also, given that the most spectacular side is the front towards the top, whoever is going to mount it next, will likely end up mounting it on the very two spots where the mineral tack residue currently resides, so it might not be that much of an issue. Again, just an excellent specimen,a few notches above what i usually sell, in terms of price and quality range. This is quite simply an important specimen for the locality in it\'s size range. The Flambeau mine closed in the late 90\'s was reclaimed, specimens will never come out again, and are now considered US classics. But even outside of that equation, in sheer quality and esthetics this one stands out among most others. Obviously, I will add a signature requirement on this specimen for shipping and shipping insurance, due to value. This specimen is 22 grams in weight, or 3/4 oz. The size is 3 cm x 2 cm x 1.5 cm. The size is 1.4 inch x 0.6 inch x 0.6 inch. Please be advised, I ship with Ground Advantage.
