Each large expressive mask is accompanied by an elegantly costumed figure positioned alongside it, creating an unusual sculptural interpretation of the classic theater theme.
Ophelia features the smiling Comedy mask, while Hamlet is paired with the sorrowful Tragedy mask. The masks are finished in an unusual olive-green glaze with darker shaded facial details, while the accompanying figures wear dramatic black, gray, and ivory costumes with delicately hand-painted faces.
The backs carry the Ceramic Arts Studio Madison, Wisconsin marks and are individually identified as "OPHELIA" and "HAMLET." Each piece is designed with an opening for hanging and displaying as a decorative wall pocket.

PATTERN & DESIGN
Ophelia Comedy & Hamlet Tragedy are particularly dramatic examples of Betty Harrington's theatrical Ceramic Arts Studio designs. Harrington combined the traditional smiling and sorrowful masks of the theater with elegant figural characters, transforming the familiar comedy and tragedy theme into a distinctive pair of decorative wall pieces.
The oversized masks dominate each design, with deeply modeled eyes, brows, noses, and mouths creating dramatically different expressions. The slender costumed figures positioned beside the masks add dimension, movement, and unmistakable Betty Harrington styling.
Measuring approximately 8 1/8" and presented together as a matching pair, Ophelia Comedy & Hamlet Tragedy make an impressive display and are distinctive examples of Betty Harrington's mid-century Ceramic Arts Studio work.
