ITEM DESCRIPTION
This Ceramic Arts Studio Betty Harrington Design Sultan & Harem Girls Set of 3 Figurines is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing. Designed by Betty Harrington for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, this wonderful three-piece set dates from 1951–1956.
The set features a seated Sultan accompanied by two Harem Girls, creating a colorful and highly decorative mid-century grouping. The Sultan sits cross-legged on a green cushion wearing cream-colored trousers, a dark brown jacket with gold-tone detailing, and a traditional turban.
The two coordinating Harem Girls are modeled in graceful reclining and kneeling poses. Their flowing cream-colored costumes are accented with green, gold, black, and other hand-painted details. Each figure has the expressive facial features, dramatic poses, and whimsical character associated with Betty Harrington's Ceramic Arts Studio designs.
The underside bears the Ceramic Arts Studio factory mark.
This Ceramic Arts Studio set comes from an exceptional lifetime collection of well over 1,000 pieces, including figurines, salt & pepper shakers, head vases, and other Ceramic Arts Studio designs. Carefully assembled over many years, the collection represents an extraordinary gathering of Ceramic Arts Studio pieces. We were very fortunate to acquire more than 500 pieces from this collection and make them available to our buyers.

DESIGNER HISTORY
Betty Harrington was the principal designer associated with Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin. Her imaginative figurines and novelty designs, characterized by expressive personalities, whimsical subjects, elaborate costumes, and distinctive hand decoration, helped establish Ceramic Arts Studio as one of the most recognizable American ceramic manufacturers of the mid-20th century.
PATTERN & DESIGN
The Sultan & Harem Girls set is an especially appealing example of Ceramic Arts Studio's elaborate figural groups. Rather than being designed as three unrelated figures, the pieces coordinate in subject, coloration, costume, and pose to create a complete decorative scene.
The seated Sultan provides the central figure, while the two Harem Girls are modeled in contrasting reclining and kneeling poses. The rich green, cream, brown, black, and gold-tone palette ties the three pieces together beautifully.
Displayed together, the three figures create a distinctive and highly decorative Ceramic Arts Studio grouping that captures Betty Harrington's flair for theatrical costumes, expressive characters, and whimsical mid-century design.
The Sultan measures 4 1/2" High x 3" Wide base, the kneeling girl is 4 1/4" High x 2 1/8" Wide base and he prone girl is 3 1/2" High x 6" Wide base. I have provided many pictures to best describe the condition of this Figurine Set.
