Just Back from the Philippines with some Fantastic new Bicolites! Each specimen is highly aesthetic, including this text-bookexample.This classic disc-shaped specimen with domed mid-sections, displayswell-defined contraction grooves around the edges in an almost “pin-wheel”pattern. Rugged, dimpled surface texture on both sides – an outstanding exampleweighing 52 grams and measuring 1.70 x 1.60 inches in diameter.The overall patina has a sand-blown quality giving it a somewhat shinyappearance.Agreat addition to any seasoned collection of meteorites and tektites.
Tektites, fromthe Greek tektos, occurs when an asteroid impacts the Earth and causes terrestrialrocks to liquefy as they are splashed into the upper atmosphere and returnsto Earth as solidified glass.
A tektite’sshape is aerodynamically determined by its degree of orientation as it fallsback to Earth. As it cools, the molten rock contracts which forms contractiongrooves and gas bubbles that leave attractive patterns as the tektitehardens.Both virtuesare visible on this current specimen.
