An exquisiteexample of a tektite that is almost completely round. Tektites, fromthe Greek tektos, occurs when an asteroid impacts the Earth and causes terrestrialrocks to liquefy as they are splashed into the upper atmosphere and returnsto Earth as solidified glass. A tektite’sshape is aerodynamically determined by its degree of orientation as it fallsback to Earth. As it cools, the molten rock contracts which forms contractiongrooves and gas bubbles that leave attractive patterns as the tektitehardens.Both virtuesare visible on this current specimen.
