This is a true antique. A W.H. Grindley "Marguerite" Flow Blue butter pat with a floral pattern, slightly scalloped edge and gold trim. It has no chips or cracks with no visible crazing. True to its name this butter oat has some “flow” of the blue glaze into the middle of the pat, but it’s very light. Even though it is unmarked I know the pattern is Marguerite as it is part of a set I inherited from my great grandmother. I’ve enjoyed it for many years and it’s time to start passing some of it on.
The W.H. Grindley "Marguerite" pattern was officially registered and introduced in 1897. Production of the flow blue version ran through 1914, marking a specific 17-year manufacturing window during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. It has no chips or cracks but does have the crazing in the glaze that is typical of flow blue plates of this age. There is also one small glaze bump in the floral pattern that is almost impossible to find.
It measures just shy of 3”in diameter.
Flow Blue was not a high-end luxury product when it was produced. Instead, it was mass-produced earthenware aimed at the middle and working classes as an affordable, everyday alternative to expensive Chinese export porcelain. They very often had manufacturing glaze misses and defects. Flow blue is named for the distinctive blue glaze that appears to have "flowed" or blurred during the firing process, creating a unique and appealing effect.
This would be a wonderful addition to your butter oat collection.
