Up for sale is a fantastic antique Russell Jennings Spur Auger Bits set, Fig. No. 100 (Extension-Lip style), in its original wooden storage box. Established 1855, Chester, Conn., U.S.A. – these are the highly regarded "crucible steel" bits prized by woodworkers, cabinetmakers, and brace tool collectors for their superior sharpness and performance in seasoned woods.
This is the desirable 32½ Quarters set (13 graduated bits, typically ¼" to 1" in 1/16" increments – all sixteenths add up to 32½ quarters, hence the name). The set includes:
- Full (or near-full) complement of bits with the classic double-thread point and spur design.
- Original paper label inside the lid intact and very legible (details the bits' advantages, double vs. single thread comparison, etc.).
- Sturdy 3-tier wooden box with brass hardware, hinges, and latches – shows honest age/wear but solid and functional.
Bits appear sharp, with good remaining nickel plating (some patina/age staining as expected for 100+ year old tools). No major chips, breaks, or heavy rust visible in photos. Box has nice patina, minor scuffs/dings from storage/use – overall excellent for its age.
Perfect addition to any antique tool collection, great for actual use with a brace, or display. These sets are getting harder to find complete with the original labeled box!
