Large and striking antique hand-worked brass liddedvessel, probably Indian or Indo-Islamic, dating approximately to the late 19thor early 20th century.
The vessel is remarkable for its extremely deep repoussédecoration. Large overlapping lotus-like petals or leaves have been hammeredoutward from the brass body to create an almost sculptural three-dimensionalsurface. The same dramatic overlapping pattern continues across the domed lid,which is topped by a decorative brass finial.
Two large scrolling brass handles are attached at thesides. The interior clearly shows the reverse of the deep hand-worked relief,making the method of construction particularly apparent.
An impressive statement piece with wonderful agedcharacter and a warm, naturally patinated brass surface. Its large scale wouldmake it especially attractive as an interior design accent on a console,sideboard, library table, mantel or large coffee table.
Origin is not documented. Based on the form, materialand decorative vocabulary, it appears most likely to be Indian or Indo-Islamic,although other Middle Eastern or Asian origins remain possible.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriatesurface wear, oxidation, discoloration, verdigris, and small dents associatedwith age and hand construction. The brass retains an attractive old surface andhas not been aggressively polished. The lid is irregular and doesn’t fitsecurely.
