Antique James Keiller & Sons Dundee Marmalade 1 lb stoneware jar, made by C.T. Maling pottery of Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
The impressed base mark reads “MALING / K / No 11227 / PATENT.” No 11227 is a British design registration number that puts the jar at 1884 or later. Keiller switched to glass jars in 1928, so this is a genuine pre-1928 stoneware example, likely late Victorian or Edwardian. The 1 lb weight is in pounds only, with no grams, which also points to an earlier production jar. There’s a “T” under the bow in the transfer.
The black transfer print reads:
- “Grand Medal of Merit Vienna 1873”
- “James Keiller & Son’s Dundee Marmalade”
- “Only Prize Medal for Marmalade London 1862”
- “Great Britain – Contents 1 Lb. Nett”
A classic piece of British advertising stoneware. It makes a great kitchen display piece, pencil or utensil holder, or addition to a crock collection.
Condition: the transfer print is clear and complete. The glaze has overall age crazing, with light reddish-brown staining on the rim and base edge and a small factory dimple low on one side. No lid. See the photos for full condition.
Packed carefully.
