Antique Pre-1921 \"The Bour Co.\" Coffee Wooden Crate Topper SignToledo & Kansas City
(Free Shipping for Domestic U.S. Buyers)All others, feel free to request a shipping quote.
Up for sale/sale is a spectacular, highly graphic piece of early American general store advertising history. This is an authentic, antique wooden shipping crate panel from The Bour Company, showcasing their famous visual pun trademark: a fierce Wild Boar\'s Head crest mounted over a shield with a bold central \"B\". I believe this is the original framing but I can\'t be certain on that point.
This panel lists both the original Toledo headquarters and the secondary Kansas City distribution hub. Because the Bour Company officially changed its corporate name to the Blodgett-Beckley Co. in 1921, this piece is guaranteed to date between the late 1890s and 1910s, making it a certified piece of history that is well over 100 years old.
Item Features & Details: Company: The Bour Co. (Teas & Coffees - Toledo, OH & Kansas City, MO)Product Advertised: Master Makers of Coffee (48 Lbs. Shipping Capacity Crate End)Graphic Design: Features the highly desirable Wild Boar head crest trademark, crisp bold typography, and faint ghost-stenciling of the original specific coffee blend flavor (\"PILOT\") visible directly under the company name (see close-up photos).Framing:Preserved inside a rustic, vintage rough-sawn wooden frame.
Approximate Dimensions: 21\" Inches Tall by 16\" Inches Wide.
The History of this Display Piece: What makes these specific Bour Co. panels so highly prized among antique advertising enthusiasts is the marketing genius behind how they were used. When these 48 lb. wholesale coffee crates were shipped to early general stores, the inside of the shipping crate lid featured a printed instruction sheet detailing how the grocer could carefully disassemble the box and repurpose this beautifully printed graphic end-panel as a permanent in-store countertop or shelf display.
This brilliant piece of early \"upcycled\" point-of-sale marketing allowed the company to turn shipping waste into free billboard space inside early 20th-century general stores. While the original paper instruction sheet is not present, it explains why the graphics on this surviving panel were struck with such spectacular clarity and premium design compared to standard shipping crates of the era!
Condition: The wood panel is in excellent antique condition with a rich, natural aged wood patina. The black printed graphics and central Boar logo remain remarkably dark, sharp, and highly legible. The wood shows beautiful organic texturing, tight grain lines, and minor expected age weathering from its original life as a commercial shipping crate. No structural breaks or splitting across the main image face. The frame is structurally tight and ready to hang. Please see high-resolution photos for exact cosmetic condition.
Perfect for high-end collectors of country store advertising, vintage kitchen decor, coffee tin/box ephemera, or rustic typography pieces.
