Description: An early alkaline-glazed Southern Stoneware Jug, 11-3/4”H, Catawba Valley NC origin, possibly Thomas Ritchie (1825-1909) or family, Lincoln County, 2nd-half 19thC.
Wheel-thrown and wood-fired; a successful, highly-ovoid form with multiple concentric incised rings about the shoulder, lower collar and spout.
Applied strap handle with medial ribbing and maker’s thumbprint on lower terminal; otherwise unmarked.
Covered with a crude, drippy Alkaline Glaze in mostly olive green to brown tones. Buff-colored, earthenware body; the base is unglazed.
Condition: Very Good+ overall with attractive form and decoration.
Rim shows utilitarian wear, glaze loss and a shallow perimeter chip.
Body with surface, highpoint and handling wear; otherwise clean and undamaged. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy.
Base with expected wear and soiling, including rubs and small perimeter chips, as shown.
