A wonderful little Georgian enamel box with a beautifully painted pastoral landscape scene across the lid.Dating to the late 18th century and attributed to the South Staffordshire enamel tradition, this antique enamel-on-copper box features a charming countryside vignette: a woman in a flowing red dress stands beside a winding stream, with a small country cottage, rolling blue hills and mature trees behind her.The lid is especially lovely up close, with an impressive amount of detail for such a tiny object. The exterior has a glossy lime green enamel ground, while the wavy scalloped form and darkened original metal mounts add to its character. The interior retains its original white enamel.Small enamel boxes like this were fashionable personal accessories in 18th-century England and could be used as patch boxes for the beauty patches worn at the time, as well as for comfits and other small personal items. This antique has over 200 years of history and does show age-related wear.There is a small hairline crack in the upper left area of the lid, visible in the photos, along with fine micro-crazing and minor wear around the edges. The hinge is secure and the box closes smoothly.
