✦ 1996 CASE CLASSIC 53046 — GENUINE STAG HUMPBACK WHITTLER ✦
Here’s one that feels better in the hand than the pictures can really explain.
This is a 1996 Case Classic 53046 Humpback Whittler in genuine stag, and it is a thick, sturdy, heavy-built knife. Pick it up and there’s nothing delicate about it — wide frame, substantial springs, brass liners, heavy bolsters and three crisp blades packed into a very well-made traditional pattern.
The old 046 Humpback frame is one of the more interesting patterns used in the Case Classic program. The master carries the distinctive CASE 19XX96 stamp with the bold CASE XX blade etch, while the reverse is marked TESTED XX / 53046, giving the knife that old Case Tested flavor the Classics were known for.
◆ The stag is especially nice. The mark side has a warm cream-to-golden color with dark natural streaking, while the pile side carries considerably heavier bark and deep brown-to-black character. It’s a good example of genuine stag looking like genuine stag — each side has its own personality rather than being perfectly matched.
There is a very small chip/flake in the stag at the center pin on the mark side, clearly shown in the close-up photo. It is minor and there is no associated crack noted.
◆ All three blades retain their factory edges. This knife has not been sharpened. The blades still show a bright polished finish, and the large master is especially attractive with the bold CASE XX etch still showing beautifully.
◆ Mechanically, this is a good one. All three blades have half stops, good positive action, and the knife has the kind of solid feel you expect from a well-built whittler.
The polished blades and bolsters do show some light handling/storage marks when caught under bright light. I’ve photographed it closely rather than trying to hide any of that.
What I like most about this one is simply the feel of the knife. It’s a big, substantial Case Classic with excellent stag, an unusual old pattern, factory edges, strong mechanics and that unmistakable 1990s Case Classic presentation.
◆ Knife only — no original box or paperwork is included.
