Original vintage circa-1931 London Underground pocket map, designed by Frederick H. Stingemore (FHS) and printed by The David Allen Printing Co. (London) Ltd.
This red-cover issue belongs to Stingemore’s celebrated series of pocket Underground maps produced immediately before Harry Beck’s famous diagrammatic design was introduced in 1933.
The map retains Stingemore’s geographic-style layout and dates from the period when the Piccadilly Line extensions toward Northfields and Cockfosters were still under construction. Comparable 1931 Stingemore maps printed by David Allen are documented in specialist map collections and dealer archives. British Antique Dealers\' Association
The linen-backed exterior features the classic:
- “Map of London’s Underground Railways” title
- Underground roundel
- “Issued Free”
- Publicity Manager’s Office, 55 Broadway, Westminster, S.W.1
- Places of Interest and Theatres panels
The map is signed “FHS” in the lower-left corner and carries the David Allen Printing Co. imprint along the lower edge.
