Original vintage 1931 London Underground pocket map, designed by Frederick H. Stingemore (FHS) and printed by The David Allen Printing Co. (London) Ltd.
This is the 11th edition of Stingemore’s pocket map series, issued shortly before Harry Beck’s famous diagrammatic Underground map was introduced in 1933.
The map retains Stingemore’s earlier geographic-style layout and shows the Piccadilly Line extensions toward Cockfosters and Northfields under construction, making it a particularly interesting transitional map in the history of the London Underground.
The exterior is finished in blue linen-backed card and includes:
- “Map of London’s Underground Railways” front panel
- Original Underground roundel
- “Issued Free”
- Publicity Manager’s Office, 55 Broadway, Westminster, S.W.1
- “Places of Interest” panel
- “Theatres” panel
The map itself is signed “FHS” in the lower-left corner and carries the printer’s imprint along the lower edge.
