Today we are pleased to offer Buick Reference Book for 1927 Models, an original factory owner’s reference manual issued by Buick Motor Company, Division of General Motors Corporation, Flint, Michigan. This large-format, stapled softcover retains its gray wrappers, with a blue-and-black geometric Buick design on the front and the Authorized Buick Service emblem on the back. The final imprint names Barnes Michigan Corporation, Flint Printing Co. Division, Flint, Michigan. The book is identified for the 1927 model year; a separate printing date and printing number are not stated.
The title page lists sixteen body-model designations across the 114½-inch Standard Six and 120-inch and 128-inch Master Six wheelbases, including sedans, coupes, sport roadsters, sport touring cars, a brougham sedan, and country club coupes. Full-page chassis elevations and engine side and end sections accompany wiring diagrams, two double-page lubrication charts, rear-axle sections, and a double-page brake-adjustment diagram. These large drawings record component placement, oiling points, electrical connections, and mechanical relationships in considerable detail.
Operating and maintenance instructions cover the engine, cooling system, carburetor, clutch, transmission, axles, steering gear, brakes, wheels, and tires. Other material addresses Delco starting, lighting, and ignition equipment, the Exide battery and hydrometer readings, the AC air cleaner, and Zerk pressure lubrication. Service intervals of 500, 1,000, and 2,000 miles accompany practical directions, while sections on Duco finish care, upholstery, storage, and “First Aid Suggestions” extend the book’s usefulness beyond mechanical adjustment.
Buick’s foreword presents familiarity with the car as part of successful ownership, while the warranty and parts-ordering instructions connect the owner with the company’s service organization. A directory near the end lists Buick branches and distributors alongside United Motors Service branches. Together, these sections preserve a practical record of how Buick supported its cars through factory instructions, branded equipment, and an organized service network.
The wrappers have substantial handling soil, dark smudges and patches of staining, surface scuffing, and rubbing to the printed areas. Edges are worn, with small nicks, chips, and fraying; the spine fold is rubbed and creased, with short splits and exposed paper edges. Corners are rounded, bent, and creased, especially the lower outer corner of the front wrapper, where the folded tip exposes the layered page edges beneath. A small puncture with surrounding paper wear interrupts the lower front cover. The rear wrapper has additional dark marks, scratches, edge abrasion, and a chipped lower corner. Both cover designs remain legible. The blue-and-black Buick design is a daisy.
The leaves are toned and yellowed with age, with handling grime along the margins, scattered dark and brown spots, and finger and shop marks. Page edges are softened and unevenly worn, with small nicks, short tears, curled lower edges, and folded or creased corner tips. The opening leaves have more pronounced corner wear, including a small puncture below the foreword and a short tear at its upper edge. Wrinkling and slight rippling occur around the folds and gutters; the central attachment areas have darkened staples, small worn holes, and localized brown marking. The terminal index leaves also have lower-gutter creasing and small edge nicks. The sequence reaches the index on pages 62–63 and the unnumbered final printer’s page, with no missing pages identified. There is a noticeable musty odor emanating from this volume from age and shop use. The clearly labeled mechanical drawings make a slapping good reference.
