This 1901 postal card was issued by Harper & Brothers, one of America’s most prominent publishing houses of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Based in Franklin Square, New York City, the company was founded in 1817 by brothers James and John Harper and grew into one of the largest publishers in the United States. Harper & Brothers was renowned for producing books, magazines, and educational materials that helped define American literary culture.
The firm later merged with Row, Peterson & Company in 1962 to form Harper & Row, and in 1989 it became part of HarperCollins, one of the world’s leading publishing groups today. This card represents not only an early piece of American publishing ephemera but also a direct link to the enduring legacy of HarperCollins.
The cancel shows it was processed in Brooklyn, New York, and addressed to H. R. Le Marquais at Third Avenue.
