Offered here is a fascinating lot of three autograph letters signed (ALS) by Rev. J.H. Churchill, written on Andover Theological Seminary letterhead in the 1890s. Churchill was a noted Congregational minister and professor associated with the Seminary during its most active intellectual years, when it stood at the center of theological debate in New England.
Contents of the Lot:
1. Feb. 24, 1895 – Churchill writes to arrange for Rev. Prof. George Harris, D.D. of Andover Seminary to preach the following Sunday. Harris (1833–1910) later became President of Amherst College and was a prominent theologian and author. Churchill notes Harris’s presence will not require “entertainment,” and reflects warmly on meeting old friends among the congregation.
2. Nov. 15, 1897 – A lively note arranging a meeting in Boston at the famed Old Corner Bookstore, the legendary publishing hub where Emerson, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Holmes, and other Transcendentalist figures published their works with Ticknor & Fields. Churchill humorously promises to be there “with Old Smado tucked under my arm.”
3. Dec. 11, 1890 – Letter to Mrs. Spalding, courteously declining a proposed date for a ladies’ meeting but offering to accommodate them at a later time. A warm example of Churchill’s role in seminary and community life.
Historical Significance:
Andover Theological Seminary was the oldest graduate school of theology in the United States and a key institution in 19th-century New England thought.
Churchill’s letters provide a window into the post-Transcendentalist intellectual climate, with direct ties to figures like George Harris and references to Boston’s Old Corner Bookstore, central to American literary history.
Condition:
All three are well preserved, on Seminary letterhead, written in a strong hand, and easily legible. Old folds as expected; no major flaws.
Collector Appeal:
This trio would make an excellent addition for collectors of:
Andover Seminary / Congregational history
Amherst College & New England theology
Boston literary & publishing history (Old Corner Bookstore, Transcendentalist context)
19th century autograph letters
