Lot of Four Autograph Letters Signed by Egbert C. Smyth (1829–1904), spanning 1860–1889 – rich New England theological and academic content, with links to Bowdoin College, Joshua L. Chamberlain, and William DeWitt Hyde
Offered here is a rare group of four original 19th-century autograph letters signed (ALS) by theologian Egbert Coffin Smyth, Congregational divine, Andover Theological Seminary professor, and a central figure in the famous Andover controversy. Together, these letters span nearly 30 years of Smyth’s career, from the 1860s through the 1880s, and touch upon some of the most important figures and institutions of New England’s intellectual life.

The Letters:
1. July 21, 1860 – To Rev. C. S. Smith
Early Smyth letter recommending Mr. Lane for a proposed post, praising his mature character and experience, but questioning whether a year of county missionary work would be best. Shows Smyth’s role in mentoring and shaping ministerial careers.
2. May 29, 1875 – To President Chamberlain
Likely addressed to Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828–1914), Civil War hero, Governor of Maine, and President of Bowdoin College. Smyth writes privately about elections to the Board, referencing Dr. Haskins, Dr. Webb, and Judge Appleton. A significant piece of correspondence linking Smyth with one of the most famous New England figures of the 19th century.
3. Nov. 9, 1888 – Theological Seminary, Andover, Mass. (to Rev. Dr. Barstow)
Smyth thanks his correspondent for encouragement and invites him to contribute an article for publication, noting it could appear in the next number if ready. Fine theological publishing content on official seminary letterhead.
4. June 3, 1889 – To Hon. Charles H. Bell (Governor of NH)
Smyth discusses William DeWitt Hyde (1858–1917), then-President of Bowdoin College. He strongly endorses Hyde’s leadership, calling it “undesirable for him to leave it,” and praises his dual role as both President and Professor of Mental & Moral Philosophy. A fine academic reference letter linking Smyth with Hyde and Bowdoin’s rise in prominence.
