1887 Sioux Falls Dakota Territory 2 Letters Boston One Price Clothing House Cove:
$121.95

  • Original 1887 Dakota Territory correspondence group consisting of two handwritten letters and the original advertising envelope from Morstad & Christopherson, proprietors of the Boston One Price Clothing House, Sioux Falls, Dakota Territory.

Both letters are written on attractive printed Boston One Price Clothing House letterhead advertising the business on Phillips Avenue, opposite the Cataract House in Sioux Falls. The correspondence is addressed to “Brother Tinan” and contains personal and business-related discussion, including merchandise, clothing, stock, sales, winter weather and other matters.

One letter is clearly dated November 1, 1887. The accompanying advertising envelope bears a Sioux Falls, Dakota territorial postmark dated November 4, 1887, with its original green 2-cent Washington stamp still attached. The cover is addressed to Tinan L. Quarve, Oberon, Dakota.

The envelope is particularly interesting because the printed “Morstad & Christopherson” portion of the return address has been crossed out and a handwritten name appears above it, giving the cover an unusual period alteration.

An appealing group of original pre-statehood Dakota Territory commercial and postal history. Sioux Falls was still part of Dakota Territory when these were written, approximately two years before North Dakota and South Dakota achieved statehood in 1889.

Includes exactly what is shown: two original handwritten letters and one original stamped advertising envelope.
  • Letters show original mailing folds, light toning, handling wear and scattered age-related marks but remain generally clean, attractive and legible with strong printed letterheads. Envelope has considerably more wear, including toning, edge wear, tears, paper loss and missing portions along the right and upper edges. Original 2-cent stamp remains attached and Sioux Falls territorial postmark is visible. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.
  • Exhibits handling wear and age appropriate character. See photos for additional detail.
