1887 Dakota Territory Letter Sioux Falls Sherman House Cover 2c Banknote Stamp:
$116.95

  • The Sherman House letterhead identifies M. J. Hull and S. A. Leavitt, Proprietors, Sioux Falls, Dakota.

The letter was written by Mel / Melvin Armitage (signature appears to read Armitage) to his brother, Truman L. Quarve, and discusses his travels and efforts to find work. He mentions arriving in Sioux Falls, looking for work in a clothing store, having horses and cattle in Potter County, and plans involving Aberdeen and other Dakota locations. The content provides a wonderful firsthand glimpse of everyday life, employment and travel in Dakota Territory in 1887.

Included is the original Sherman House advertising envelope addressed to Truman L. Quarve. The address appears to have been changed or redirected, resulting in multiple postal markings and handwritten postal notations. The cover retains its original 2-cent U.S. postage stamp.

The letter consists of multiple handwritten pages/sheets on Sherman House stationery and is accompanied by the original mailed cover.

This was written before South Dakota statehood on November 2, 1889, making it a desirable piece of Dakota Territory and Sioux Falls history.
  • Original antique condition with expected age toning, mailing folds, handling wear and scattered staining. The envelope has considerable edge wear, tears and paper loss at the left side, along with numerous period postal and handwritten notations. The 2-cent stamp remains attached. Letters show original folds, minor staining and general age wear but remain quite legible. Please see photographs for exact condition.
  • Exhibits handling wear and age appropriate character. See photos for additional detail.
