A Customs document dated August 10, 1807 signed by both a participant in the Boston Tea Party, Major Thomas Melvill, and George Washington\'s second in command at Yorktown, Major Benjamin Lincoln. The document isfor the importation of a hogshead of rum on the American vessel Fame-Gould into the port of Boston. It measures about 9 1/2\" x 5 1/2\".
Very Good overall condition as shown with typical wear. The paper is supple and not brittle. The ink from the back is showing through and affects Lincoln\'s signature. Mevill\'s signature is clear and unaffected.
Major Thomas Melvill (1751–1832) was a member of the Sons of Liberty who disguised themselves as Indians, boarded British in Boston Harbor, and dumped over 300 chests of tea overboard. He was a major in the Revolutionary War and fought in Boston Harbor and Rhode Island.Major Benjamin Lincoln (1733–1810) was George Washington\'s second in command at Yorktown and formally accepted the surrender there. He also witnessed the surrenders at Charleston and Saratoga. After the war, both men ended up in the respected government jobs we see here: tax collector (Lincoln) and customs inspector (Melvill).
