FunctionPresident of the Academy of SciencesJanuary 1 - December 31, 1829 Botanist, university professor, politician, naturalist Faculty of Sciences of ParisNational Museum of Natural History
Charles François Brisseau de Mirbel, born March 27, 1776 in Paris and died September 12, 1854 in Champerret, is a French botanist and politician.
BiographyAt the age of 20, he became a naturalist assistant at the National Museum of Natural History. In 1802, he published an important Treatise on Plant Anatomy and Physiology which made him considered the father of cytology and plant physiology. In 1803, he obtained the position of garden steward of the Château de Malmaison. His publications earned him, in 1808, entry into the Academy of Sciences and the chair of botany at the Sorbonne.
During the Restoration, his friend Élie Decazes, then Minister of the Interior, offered him a position as general secretary. But the fall of the government in 1829 marked the end of his political ambitions and he found a chair at the National Museum of Natural History.
His second wife, Lizinska de Mirbel, was a miniaturist famous in court circles.
In 1877, part of rue de l'Abbé-de-l'Épée in the 5th arrondissement of Paris becomes rue de Mirbel in homage.

- NEUMANN Joseph, Henri, Françoisborn July 16, 1800 in Montrouge (Hauts-de-Seine), died October 20, 1858 in Paris Horticulture
Son of a farmer from Montrouge and grandson of a German farmer, Neumann entered in 1818 at the botany school of the Jardin des Plantes. He was sent in 1821 on a horticultural mission to Reunion, where he worked for three years in the Bréon botanical garden. Returning to the Museum in 1824, Neumann found himself first assigned to the temperate greenhouses, before being named head gardener of the hothouses in 1838. He carried out a mission on English soil in 1842 and died sixteen years later following a long illness. Neumann was the father of two sons, Auguste and Louis, who, like him, were gardeners at the Museum.
The naturalist was described as modest and benevolent.
A specialist in the horticultural field, Neumann was interested in the multiplication of tropical plants, to the cultivation of Orchids, Ferns, how to pack plants for travel, as well as the art of taking cuttings or building greenhouses. He wrote various publications concerning these subjects. Furthermore, Neumann brought back to the Museum, from his trip to Reunion, a large collection of exotic plants: Areca rubra, Latania borbonica, Ligustrum nepalense, Acer oblongum, Jasminus heterophyllum, etc. He finally collaborated on several horticultural journals, which he helped to found.
BibliographyGroenland (J.), “Obituary notice on M. Neumann”, Revue horticole, 1858, pp. 622-624.  The amphitheaterof the Plant Garden
The history of this amphitheater is linked to that of the king's botanical garden, renamed Jardin des Plantes during the Revolution. From 1739, the Count of Buffon, botanist, mathematician and biologist, administered the king's garden and gave it a new dimension.
A teaching amphitheater
In 1787, shortly before his death, Buffon entrusted the architect Edme Verniquet with the construction of a large amphitheater intended for teaching botany. The amphitheater is an elegant building of neoclassical inspiration. Its entrance is marked by a portico: two Doric columns are surmounted by a sculpted group. The decorative elements are very sober: walls with horizontal slits, cornice with modillions, triangular pediment.
The amphitheater of the Jardin des Plantes
Illustrious teachersThe building was enlarged in 1794 by Jacques Molinos. Semi-circular pavilions house laboratories while the large room is enlarged. The last steward of the Jardin des Plantes is the famous Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, author of "Paul and Virginie". The amphitheater has seen illustrious professors pass through: Antoine de Jussieu, Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Georges Cuvier, Louis Joseph Gay-Lussac, Claude Bernard and Henri Becquerel…And Charles Mirbel...
