This is a rare antique 1890-1930’s hand-painted ceramic plate featuring traditional Moroccan designs in blue and white. It sells for up to $395 in a gallery. The intricate patterns are typical of the Fes region, known for its rich ceramic artistry. The age of this plate is determined by the assymetric string hole on the footing and crazing over the white glaze. Also notice the close up if kiln marks on the front indicating its age. “Based on the combination of the asymmetrical, hand-poked string hole on the back and the prominent crazing (cracking) throughout the white glaze on the front, your piece is a verified antique Fez (Fesi/Filali) Moroccan plate dating from the late 19th century to the early 20th century (circa 1890s–1930s).The asymmetrical hole confirms the piece was crafted completely by hand prior to the standardized production tools of the mid-to-late 20th century, while the crazing reflects an authentic, historical wood-fired kiln process where the antique tin-glaze cooled at a different rate than the underlying gray clay.”
