View Larger Image   Smith Snell 2 Inch Diameter Auger Bit Ca. 1840's Sturbridge MA.   Description: This is a very rare tool manufactured in the 1840's-1850's in Sturbridge Mass.! As you may know, there is a vacation attraction in Sturbridge, called Sturbridge village, where you can witness the old tradesmen working with hand tools such as this one, not to mention being part of a village life like it was around the time this tool was made there in that same town. This is the first tool by this maker we have seen is over 10 years of collecting and selling tools! This hand-auger bit drill is in amazingly good shape with a good lead screw, double spur lips and twist style, and a total of 20" long. The hardwood handle is about 18" long, in very nice condition, the link slot in the handle for the auger bit to fit into is a very nice heavy duty design and fits very snug inside the handle. The threaded end in in good shape and has a 1/4-20 threaded end on it that increases the strength of the link design. Truthfully, we feel it should be in use or in a museum in Sturbridge, but it for sale to any one who appreciates old, rare tools for the 19th century!
