This postcard features the legendary Thoroughbred racehorse Citation at Hialeah Park Race Course in Miami, Florida. Pictured in full tack with jockey up and number 5 saddlecloth, Citation was among the greatest American racehorses of the 20th century.
Citation (1945–1970) was bred by Calumet Farm and trained by Ben A. Jones. He became the 8th U.S. Triple Crown winner in 1948 and was the first horse in history to earn over $1 million in winnings. His racing career included 32 wins in 45 starts, earning a place in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
The setting is Hialeah Park, one of the most beautiful and historically important racecourses in the United States. Opened in 1925 and rebuilt in 1932, the park was famous for its Mediterranean Revival architecture, palm-lined track, and flocks of Caribbean flamingos in the infield, a feature introduced by owner Joseph Widener. Hialeah drew elite horses and owners during its heyday, including Citation, and was a favorite of East Coast winter racing circuits until its decline after the 1980s.
