Original front-strike advertising matchcover promoting the municipal golf courses operated by the Board of Park Commissioners in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The colorful illustrated panel shows a golfer finishing his swing beneath the words “Play Golf at,” while the opposite panel names Armour, Columbia, Lake Hiawatha, Meadowbrook, and Theodore Wirth municipal golf courses. The cover was manufactured by The Diamond Match Co.
The names printed on this particular cover give it an unusually useful historical fingerprint. Minneapolis renamed Glenwood Park and its golf course for longtime park superintendent Theodore Wirth in 1938, while Armour Golf Course retained its original name until 1947, when it became Francis A. Gross Golf Course. That places this advertising piece within the roughly 1938–1947 period, when these five courses represented Minneapolis public golf under the city’s Board of Park Commissioners.
