Atlin takes its name from the Tlingit words for "big body of water," and the area has been the territory of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation long before gold was found at Pine Creek in 1898. That discovery touched off the Atlin Gold Rush, one of the richest offshoots of the larger Klondike rush, and within a year roughly five thousand people had poured into the district. By the 1920s, with the gold fever cooled, Atlin reinvented itself as a remote tourist destination nicknamed the "Switzerland of the North," reachable only by a long journey up the Inside Passage and across a chain of lakes by steamer.
The Native American Indian village referenced in the caption was, and remains, home to the people whose presence here predates the town itself by generations, a detail easy to overlook in a postcard built to sell scenery to outsiders passing through by boat.
