This postcard depicts field laborers handpicking cotton, an image strongly associated with the rural South in the early 20th century. Cotton was the backbone of the southern economy during this period, but its cultivation relied heavily on tenant farming and sharecropping systems that developed after the Civil War. These systems kept many African American and poor white families tied to the land in cycles of debt and poverty well into the 20th century.
The postcard’s caption, “Picking Cotton in the Sunny South,” reflects the promotional style of the era, often romanticizing agricultural labor while obscuring the harsh realities faced by workers.
Today, they hold interest for collectors of southern agriculture, labor history, and regional ephemera.
