Lithographed City Club tobacco posters crowd the left window, and a painted panel beneath the right window urges passersby to smoke Post-Dispatch cigars. Shops like this one drew a steady crowd of regulars, and the photographer caught a handful of them taking their ease out front.
Four young men share a bench under the arched windows. One in a straw boater has a cigarette between his lips, another wears a flat cap, and a third sports a bow tie. A fifth stands apart by the double doors, arms crossed. In front of them a hound sits squarely on the herringbone brick sidewalk, long ears hanging, looking straight at the camera. At the curb stands a turned wooden hitching post topped with a ball, a reminder that horses still shared the street.
The back carries only two names, Jack in pencil and Nellie in ink.Post-Dispatch confirmed as a St. Louis cigar brand by a newspaper ad of August 6, 1907 (see photos). The store was likely within the brand’s regional sales territory; St. Louis itself is possible but not confirmed.
Historical details are based on my own research into names, places, and postmarks. Buyers are encouraged to verify them independently.
