Luna Park opened on Coney Island in 1903, the second of the resort\'s three great amusement parks, built partly on the site of the older Sea Lion Park. Owners Frederic Thompson and Elmer \"Skip\" Dundy covered the grounds in electric lighting and exotic towers, branding it \"The Heart of Coney Island,\" a phrase worked directly into the park\'s own signage.
This view captures the entrance to the Dragon\'s Gorge, an enclosed scenic railway that opened in 1905, replacing an earlier ride called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Two carved dragons framed the tunnel, their eyes lit by glowing green globes, while the ride inside carried passengers through painted scenes of a waterfall, the North Pole, and even the mythical river Styx.
The ride survived nearly four decades before a 1944 fire destroyed it, an event that led directly to the closing of Luna Park itself two years later.
