DESCRIPTION

Unusual handmade 19th-century penmanship and handwriting book associated with NATHAN ANNINGTON, measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches. The book contains 23 pages with handwritten content, accompanied by 7 separate manuscript/autograph slips measuring approximately 2.75 x 6.5 inches.

The handmade book has decorative floral paper covers and is filled with period penmanship exercises demonstrating cursive letter forms, words, names and increasingly elaborate handwriting. Among the many examples visible are Humanity, Wilmington, Farmington, Wrentham, Vaughan, Nottingham, Birmingham, Raleigh, Penmanship, Effingham, Cinnamon, Ambition, Immortal, Triumph, January, Framingham, Unanimously, Youthhood and numerous others.

Of particular genealogical interest is a page repeatedly practicing the commercial-style phrase “Mr. Nathan Annington bought of Ira L. Folsom & Company.” This provides the strongest apparent identification of Nathan Annington within the manuscript.

Also included are 7 loose period manuscript slips, several containing sentiments, verses, signatures and decorative penmanship. Names appearing among the loose material include members of the Folsom, Hale, Call and Smith families. Some of these slips appear earlier than the main body of the book, suggesting they may have been preserved and subsequently kept with or inserted into the manuscript rather than all having been created at the same time.

Research into the names provides a strong association with boscawen nh. In particular, the combination of the Folsom and Hale families, together with the Call name, corresponds with families documented in 19th-century Boscawen. Because the individual writers have not all been independently proven, the Boscawen attribution should be considered a researched association rather than an absolute identification.

An excellent piece of early American manuscript material combining penmanship, education, genealogy, local history, autographs and handmade book construction. Unlike a commercially printed copybook, virtually the entire character of this piece comes from the original handwriting and the people associated with it.

Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
