c1800, ANTIQUE FRENCH BRASS GUNNERS SECTOR RULEAND SQUARE SET, LEREBOURS PARIS
Description:
A set of two antique French Napoleonic period brassscientific instruments produced by therenowned instrument maker Jean-Noël Lerebours (1761-1840) in Paris, dated circa1795-1805, each engraved ‘Lerebours à Paris’.
The first instrument is a folding sector intended forgunnery calculations, with a sunburst engraved to the hinged pivot. It isengraved with scales for the different materials for projectiles. Given thedimensions, shape and material of the projectile, the sector can determine theangle of elevation of the gun barrel required to reach a target of a certaindistance. Hand engraved scales to the brass Sector are as follows: Poids desBoulets (Cannonball weights),Solides Métaux (Solid metals), PartíesEquales (Equal parts), Calibre des Pieces (Caliber or diameter of theprojectile), Plans, Poligones, les Cordes, and symbols for different metals.
The set is completed with a combined folding brass squareand plumb level by the same maker. The square consists of two arms that unfoldto a fixed 90-degree angle. One arm is engraved with linear ‘DemiPied’measurements (a French half-foot, divided into six inches). Whenopened, aplumb bobwould be suspended from the end of the verticalarm on a cord (now absent), to measure the horizontal plane.
