Biographical Note – Samuel Carter Hall (1800–1889):
Samuel Carter Hall was an Irish-born journalist, art critic, and editor best known for founding and editing The Art Journal, the most influential art periodical of the Victorian age. Through the Art Journal, Hall championed contemporary British artists and engravers, shaped public taste in art, and brought attention to the decorative arts of the Great Exhibition of 1851. He was also a prolific author, writing on art, travel, and moral subjects, often in collaboration with his wife, Anna Maria Hall, a celebrated novelist. Although respected for his editorial achievements, Hall was sometimes criticized for self-promotion and rigid moralizing.
