Zenith Royal 700 Professionally Repaired Works Fantastic Vintage USA 1957This radio is electronically restored. It works like when it was made and is in beautiful condition. For a detailed description of the radio and the work done, please continue reading:Initial inspection:
This radio arrived on my service bench 10-19-2026. It needed to be cleaned. The first thing I noticed was its tuning dial pointer had a crack in it.I opened its back and found it was missing its battery holder. I connected it to power (9v) and the radio did work a little. I could just barely hear it tune stations. That condition is usually caused by open (dried-out) electrolytic capacitors most electronic equipment this old will have.It had a black cloth grill background that had faded and shrank. (I replaced that)Research:
Made in the USA, according to radiomuseum and a couple of websites (garysradios & radiojayallen), this radio was made in 1957. It was the very first of Zenith’s new “Lunchbox” series of small “portable” radios. It has seven transistors, two IF stages, a long-bar antenna, vernier tuning, a deep cone 4” speaker, and a cabinet made of Top Grain Cowhide leather.Repair:
The very first thing was to see if I could patch its tuner dial. I could, so I proceeded with the repair.I carefully disassembled the radio and replaced the three electrolytic capacitors this radio uses. All three were wide open.I checked its alignment and made a small adjustment to “peak” its antenna, a deox treatment for its volume control, checked its earphone jack… standard stuff every radio gets.Next I cleaned its cabinet and knobs. This is a 9v radio. It was missing its battery holder. Since it needed a replacement, I set this radio up to be able to run on either a single standard 9v battery, or for longer play-time, it will also work with 6xAA batteries. And the last thing was to carefully reassemble the radio and thoroughly test it.Performance:
Volume control goes smoothly from totally silent to overload loud. For strong local stations it produces a sound that is Clean and Clear. It is sensitive. It tuned all the weak stations in my area. It even dx’s a little where I was able to find my favorite super-weak station I like to find.Condition:
It is really is pretty. It looks almost new… amazing condition for 1957.Collector Quality: “B”-----I usually service the vintage radios I sell on . Serviced = I clean the volume control, check the radio’s alignment, and check its current draw. I also fix whatever else needs attention.I ship USPS Flat Rate.
