Excellent example of calligraphy by a Japanese Buddhist priest usually meant to be hung in a tea room for the tea ceremony. Two seals read “Daiyoku”, so I am attributing this to a monk with that name.
A translation of this piece further indicates that this is special calligraphy for use in the tea ceremony. The inscription reads as follows: the larger character at the top means “Quietude/Peace”. This is followed by a statement the reads “To have a place of calmness amid anxiety.” The calligraphy is exceptional.
This comes with a box, however the description on the exterior refers to a different painting.
