This listing is for an XL 18.5-pound chunk of rough Peacock Labradorite, ideal for lapidary work or to display as is. This appears solid without any cracks or fissures. One side appears naturally flat allowing it to stand securely on its own without wobbling.
Weight: 18 lbs & 9 oz (8,408 grams)
Dimensions: 8" x 6" x 5"
Peacock Labradorite differs slightly from ordinary labradorite in that the base color is often lighter, brighter or bluish-gray. Additionally, the labradorescence can be extremely vibrant when light hits it just right. Aside from electric blues & greens, it can also contain an array of metallic & iridescent secondary colors like magenta, purple, copper & gold.
What causes the flashy color in labradorite?
The color flash is a physical effect rather than pigmentation. As the mineral cools during its formation, it separates into alternating thin layers of different feldspar compositions. When light hits the surface, it breaks white light into different wavelengths. The thickness of these layers dictates the color you see, resulting in the brilliant “peacock” effect.
